Welcome to Dove Cottage, Peak District

Nestled in a secluded dale, on the banks of the River Dove in the Peak District, lies a remarkable former Victorian fishing lodge. Dove Cottage is more than just a place to stay; it is a genuine retreat. This beautifully refurbished hideaway offers families and couples a tranquil escape, blending original character with luxurious comfort to create the perfect base for exploring the Derbyshire Dales.

Imagine waking up to the gentle sound of the river flowing past your window, the only interruption the call of a dipper or the rustle of leaves. This is the everyday magic at Dove Cottage, a place where you can step straight from your private garden onto a riverside footpath, allowing you to lose yourself in the landscape the moment you walk out the door.

Stepping inside, you enter a home where modern luxury and rustic charm sit comfortably together. The original Victorian soul has been carefully preserved, with features like the quarry-tiled flooring and the two wood-burning stoves creating a wonderfully cosy atmosphere, all complemented by a high-end renovation throughout.

The accommodation is generously proportioned for families or groups of friends, offering two bedrooms and two bathrooms. After a long day on the Tissington Trail or exploring the famous Stepping Stones at Dovedale, you can settle into the large sitting room and watch the evening light fade over the historic mill opposite.

Dove Cottage view through window

Step inside, and you immediately feel the character of this Victorian fishing lodge. The large sitting room is the undeniable heart of the cottage, its bay window framing a picture-perfect view over the river and the historic mill opposite. Here, you can sink into comfortable seating as the light fades, with the wood-burning stove casting a warm glow across the room. It is the perfect spot to plan the next day’s adventures or simply lose yourself in a good book while the sounds of the river drift through the walls.

Through to the dining room, the original quarry-tiled floors speak to the building’s heritage, while the second wood-burning stove, affectionately known as the ‘Clock’ stove, creates an intimate setting for lingering meals together. Beyond lies the well-equipped kitchen, where an Everhot range cooker takes centre stage. Every detail has been considered, from the double Belfast sink to the generous supply of cooking utensils, making it easy to prepare everything from a hearty breakfast before a walk to a celebratory dinner.

Upstairs, the accommodation offers space for everyone to retreat and recharge. The king-sized bedroom provides a serene sanctuary, while the twin bedroom is equally comfortable. Both rooms feature washbasins, adding a thoughtful touch of convenience. The luxury bathroom is a highlight, with its freestanding double-ended bath and a double walk-in shower with a rainfall head—a genuinely indulgent space to soak tired muscles after a long day on the trails. A handy second bathroom downstairs completes the layout, ideal for washing off muddy boots after a riverside ramble.

Outside, the private side garden invites you to make the most of the setting. With a dining table and chairs, padded sun-loungers and a barbecue, it is a lovely spot to sit with a cup of tea and watch the world, or at least the river, drift slowly by. Whether you are gathered around the stove inside or enjoying the evening sunshine in the garden, Dove Cottage offers a proper home from home in every season.

Your Own Private Slice of Derbyshire

Outside, your private garden is one of the property’s greatest assets. Tucked away beside the cottage with the river Dove flowing just beyond, it is the ideal place to enjoy a morning coffee as the sun rises over Wolfscote Dale or to fire up the barbecue on a long summer evening. Furnished with a dining table and chairs, padded sun loungers and a parasol, you can settle in and watch the light change across the valley. For walkers and cyclists, the footpath leading directly from the bottom of the garden offers endless exploration, ensuring your stay is as adventurous as it is peaceful.

Explore the Peak District and Beyond

While you may be tempted never to leave the riverside tranquillity of Dove Cottage, its location is the perfect base for discovering the very best of the Peak District.

Just a mile or so up the lane, the pretty village of Alstonefield awaits. This unspoilt White Peak village, with its stone cottages and historic church, offers a warm welcome at its traditional pubs—the ideal spot for a well-earned pint after a day on the trails. A short walk or drive in the opposite direction brings you to the hamlet of Milldale, a picture-postcard cluster of cottages nestled in the Dove Valley. From here, you can join the riverside path north towards Hartington or simply enjoy the peace of this quieter corner of the dale.

For walkers, the possibilities are endless. The footpath from the bottom of the garden leads you directly into Wolfscote Dale, one of the finest limestone valleys in the National Park. A little further afield, the charming market town of Ashbourne offers supermarkets, independent shops and a bustling Friday market. Other nearby treasures include the famous stepping stones at Dovedale, the dramatic caverns at Castleton, and the historic spa town of Buxton with its elegant architecture and renowned opera house.
